Monday Movie Meme – Best Picture Snubs at the Oscars

For every Oscar winning film, there is often one or more that we wish took home the gold instead. So let’s celebrate these films in the theme for this week’s Monday Movie Meme: Best Picture Snubs at the Oscars.

Share on your blog or in the comments section, the movies you’d wish had won an Oscar for Best Picture.

Meaning, films that were obviously nominated but still lost to another (better or worse) motion picture. I’m drawing a blank for picks, so, courtesy of some mentions by Herman at Terrible Analogies, here is a selection of Oscar nominees for Best Picture that were snubbed at the Academy Awards. He picked the movies. I’m just elaborating on them in the descriptions.

Goodfellas

Of the six Oscar nominations this crime drama received in 1991, it lays claim to one – Joe Pesci’s win for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. It’s almost hard to imagine such a favorite gangster flick being snubbed, but alas, “Goodfellas” was upstaged by the adventure movie “Dances with Wolves.” Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather: Part III” was also in the running for best picture. Maybe it wasn’t a good year for mob movies, as far as awards season goes. It’s a damn shame.

Pulp Fiction

Quentin Tarantino’s crime thriller is a cult favorite and arguably one of the best films ever made; nominated for seven Oscars in 1995. It took home one golden statue for Best Writing (basically, Best Screenplay!) but was snubbed in the Best Picture category, where it was up against another goodie – crime drama “The Shawshank Redemption.” However, the romantic drama “Forrest Gump” scored the win for Best Picture that year.

Saving Private Ryan

The Academy could not deny this war movie by Steven Spielberg -- or could they? The World War II film did win five of its eleven Oscar nominations in 1999. Those wins just didn’t include Best Picture, an honor that went to the romantic comedy drama “Shakespeare in Love”.

What Best Picture nominees would YOU say were wrongly snubbed at the Oscars?

Monday Movie Meme - The Workout Plan

The theme for this week’s Monday Movie Meme is inspired by the fact that exercising is so rewarding, yet, seems like a chore when you haven’t done it for a while. Film does a body good: The Workout Plan.

Share on your blog or in the comments section, movies featuring people working out.

They don’t necessarily have to be in a gym setting, so long as they are working on maintaining or improving their fitness level.

Here are my selections for this week’s The Workout Plan theme. I have to say, of the three listed here, there is only ONE favorite of mine. Extra points go to whoever guesses which one that could be.

Baggage Claim

A provocative flight attendant sprays water on herself while using a treadmill – to attract some male attention at the gym, in this comedy starring Jill Scott and Derek Luke.

Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Master

It wasn’t enough for Freddy to be chasing Alice down – he took the liberty of interrupting her friend’s workout session for a little roach motel fun in this horror film starring Robert Englund, Brooke Theiss, Tuesday Knight and Lisa Wilcox.

Think like a Man

A speaker on the video screen angers a successful business woman while she gets her treadmill running on in this comedy starring Taraji P. Henson, Kevin Hart and Michael Ealy.

What movies have YOU seen that feature people exercising?

Monday Movie Meme Presents The Break-Up & A Special Announcement

So, I’m watching an episode of Family Feud recently and comedian Steve Harvey asks a contestant to name the month where the most couples breakup. My immediate guess is that February would be the top answer on the board. Unfortunately other contestant playing in the fast-money round thought so too – leading her family to only accumulate around 190 or so points when all was said and done. Want to know what the top answer was? December! Yeah, they don’t make this stuff up. Or, do they? I mean that has to be one of the most depressing months of the year. Anyway, the theme for this week’s Monday Movie Meme: The Break-Up.

Share on your blog or in the comments section, movies featuring scenes where couples decide to call it quits. Since we’ve already covered messy divorces in film, this week is all about unmarried couples…okay?! Make sure to visit the blogs of fellow Monday Movie Meme participants. Here are my selections for this week’s The Break-Up theme.

Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind

There is a breakup that occurs in this romantic Sci-Fi movie. At this time, however, I just don’t recall when or how it transpires.

New Jack City

Drug Lord Nino Brown is involved in one of the most gangsta breakup scenes I’ve ever seen in this crime thriller starring Wesley Snipes, Michael Michele, Ice-T, Judd Nelson and Mario Van Peebles.

Cancel that ho!”

Coming to America

Lisa returned ruby earrings (were they Rubys? I forget) to Akeem during the subway scene where this fast food heiress made it clear that she wanted nothing more to do with him.

What breakup scenes have YOU seen in a movie?
