Monday Movie Meme Presents The Break-Up & A Special Announcement

So, I’m watching an episode of Family Feud recently and comedian Steve Harvey asks a contestant to name the month where the most couples breakup. My immediate guess is that February would be the top answer on the board. Unfortunately other contestant playing in the fast-money round thought so too – leading her family to only accumulate around 190 or so points when all was said and done. Want to know what the top answer was? December! Yeah, they don’t make this stuff up. Or, do they? I mean that has to be one of the most depressing months of the year. Anyway, the theme for this week’s Monday Movie Meme: The Break-Up.

Share on your blog or in the comments section, movies featuring scenes where couples decide to call it quits. Since we’ve already covered messy divorces in film, this week is all about unmarried couples…okay?! Make sure to visit the blogs of fellow Monday Movie Meme participants. Here are my selections for this week’s The Break-Up theme.

Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind

There is a breakup that occurs in this romantic Sci-Fi movie. At this time, however, I just don’t recall when or how it transpires.

New Jack City

Drug Lord Nino Brown is involved in one of the most gangsta breakup scenes I’ve ever seen in this crime thriller starring Wesley Snipes, Michael Michele, Ice-T, Judd Nelson and Mario Van Peebles.

Cancel that ho!”

Coming to America

Lisa returned ruby earrings (were they Rubys? I forget) to Akeem during the subway scene where this fast food heiress made it clear that she wanted nothing more to do with him.

What breakup scenes have YOU seen in a movie?

Let's hear it for New Jack City...one of my guilty pleasure movies!

Break ups in movies....

-The Wedding Singer (the engaged couple break up)
-Sleepless In Seattle (again, the engaged couple break up)
-Twister (and yet again, the engaged couple break up)

Wow...what's with all of these bad engagement movies? Heh....

I just saw "Eternal Sunshine" the other day and it trumps anything I could suggest. A great list Nicole and Steve Harvey is hilarious reading the phone book.

Tina,
Here's wondering if some of those break-up stories in your arsenal might make for an interesting movie...or two ;)

Herman,
So you get your fix with 'New Jack' ey?! It has to be one of my all time favorite gangster flicks! Calling off an engagement has to be one of the most heartbreaking ways for a couple to call it quits. You sure know how to create a theme within a theme! Great picks, especially "Sleepless in Seattle" because , woooah nelly, I didn't see that one coming. Is Sharon Stone in 'Sleepless' or am I getting my 90s (was that a 90s movie?) actresses mixed up?

Maurice,
Your nomination makes a total of two points for "Eternal Sunshine" -- so let's call it the break-up movie of the week, yes?! -- well, tied with New Jack City, which also scores two points. While you mentioned it trumps anything you'd add, I'm still curious to know how you would compare "Eternal Sunshine" with "500 Days of Summer" in terms of breakups and the way the main character of those movies replayed the ups, downs and turning points of their relationships.
