Russel Crowe wants American Gangster director to win 2008 Oscar

Fresh off of the heels of a success with the movie American Gangster, actor Russell Crowe wants Ridley Scott to win an Academy Award for his contributions in film. "Best Director" is the goal when it comes down to it.

Ridley Scott directed American Gangster, which was number one at the box office in USA upon it's release this month. He has also worked with Russell Crowe before in Gladiator. "He is one of the greatest visual artists of our time and deserving of any honour that comes his way.", says Crowe. In this case, that honor is an Oscar in particular.

Both Crowe and his co-star, Denzel Washington envision American Gangster as the film that will bring Ridley Scott his deserving Oscar. By the time the Academy Awards roll around, Ridley Scott will be 70 years old. If he does not get the Oscar this time, who knows when it will be or if it will ever happen? It is not rare for talented and deserving Directors and actors alike to get passed on when it comes to an Oscar win. It took a long time for Martin Martin Scorsese to finally get one, when he could have had an Oscar or two within the last decade or so.

However, Scorsese did get the Oscar that he deserved. Therefore, it may be in the cards for Ridley Scott this tiem around. American Gangster has been received well, so Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington may be on to something with their prediciton of this being the movie that does it for Scott. Best of Luck for Ridley Scott. You have done many awesome movies. This may indeed be your year to shine brighter than ever before.

I'm Not There Trailer brings Bob Dylan Movie to light

While browsing the net today, I was able to check out the I'm Not There trailer for the upcoming movie. I have not always been a fan of movies that are based on musicians, but I'm Not There appears to be worth checking out. It tells a different story about the life of famous singer/musician, Bob Dylan. Ok, if you are reading this and may think all of a sudden "why would I want to see this movie?" just relax for a minute. Everyone may not listen to Bob Dylan's songs (I know I don't), but just about everyone should know who he is. That is of course if you have been living on a remote island for this entire century. There are more coll point to this film than you might think.

I know that I said that I'm not a fan of musician movies, but some of them are actually cool such as Ray and Walk The Line. If the Bob Dylan factor doesn't interest you, consider who made the film. Todd Haynes is reason enough to go see I'm Not There. He is talented and while this film director does not put out numerous movies all of the time, these flicks are worth checking out when he does. Now, I will take into consideration that all of you may not be familiar with Todd Haynes.

Now let's have a 101 course on this director. Once upon a time, he produced a film about singer/drummer, Karen Carpenter using Barbie dolls. While it has become one of his most talked about works and was even on the list of Entertainment Weekly's "Top 50 Cult Films of All-Time", its not available at Blockbuster or any of the legal retail outlets. This means that more than likely, if you haven't seen it, more than likely you WON'T. I say more than likely because Todd Haynes got into trouble with Mattel and Karen Carpenter's brother because of the film. Therefore, it cannot be sold or distributed. You can only get it on bloogleg and even that can be tricky as Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story has been out of circulation. Most times, bootleg movies should NOT be purchased, but if you can get this film somehow, it is something worth checking out. Now that you have a little 411 on Todd Haynes and I'm Not There, consider going to see this movie. The I'm Not There release date is November 21, 2007.

Special Jury Prize

Movies to Watch on Halloween Part2

The Enigma Factory, Inc. ©2007. Used with permission.

Up until October 31st, I will be listing some other scary horror or thriller movies to watch on Halloween. First, I mentioned the indie horror film Holla that is being distributed by Lionsgate, a major Hollywood distributor. Now let’s talk about the independent short film Broken by Alex Ferrari.

Yes, this is a short film that will not last longer than 30 minutes, if that. However, Broken by Alex Ferrari is on DVD and can be used as a primer to set the tone for your frightening evening. Roger Ebert likes this film that’s a good indication that Broken is a must-see, especially among movies to watch on Halloween. I saw this film at the Bare Bones Script 2 Screen Film Festival last year and would recommended for those of you looking for great suspense and a good scare on Halloween.

The film’s director, Alex Ferrari currently lives in Florida where Uptown Saturday Night is happening. What an exciting coincidence. Now getting to the story, Broken is about a woman who is abducted by a vicious stranger and later realizes that the answer to her survival can be found in a disturbing dream that she has been witnessing. I should have known that this movie was going to be crazy but was still surprised when it screened at the film festival. You don’t have to attend a festival to watch it because it’s available on DVD. It also comes with lots of fun special features to enjoy. This will hold you over while snacks are being prepared and decision are being made for the rest of your movies to watch on Halloween. Enjoy Broken!

The DVD can be purchased by visiting the What is Broken website.
