Sunday Synopsis – Abyss gets a Home and Customers Want More Netflix

The ABYSS movie website and Festival Limbo

Although it’s still a work in progress at this juncture, I managed to get a website up for my short film, “ABYSS.” It (www.abyssthemovie.com) contains the synopsis, a list of cast and crew as well as other information related to the movie. Updates to the website will be posted there as they come in and as time permits. I’ve spent the last few weeks submitting the movie to festivals and am now playing the waiting game as I look to find out where and when (and if) “ABYSS” will be premiering as well as when and where it will have additional screenings.

In an attempt to save time, space and maintain whatever good juju may be in the workings for me and/or the movie, I won’t be mentioning any of the specific festivals until I hear from them with regards to the project’s status. I will say, however, that upwards of $309 in submission fees alone was spent on trying to secure a premiere for this movie – and it still needs a poster, exhibition prints and related materials – most of which I am currently working on getting done now, as the submissions efforts have slowed to a halt for the time being.

New Monday Movie Meme Participants…

I’d like to send a special shout out to Michael Hennessy at A Few Minutes with the Hennessys for joining in on our Monday Movie Madness. He has been participating in the Monday Movie Meme (MMM) for a few weeks now and I especially like how he remains active by not only posting his selections on his own blog while linking back to the MMM post for the week but also introducing the meme to his readers and followers in social media. Michael also blogs about books in the Mystery, Sci-Fi and Suspense/Thriller genres, for all of you book worms. Check him out, say hello and welcome him to our regularly scheduled walks down memory lane on the big screen.

Netflix Has DVDs?

A few days ago, a woman who currently subscribes to the Netflix streaming service asked me if they offered DVDs for rental when she noticed a red envelope that I was holding with their logo on it. That seemed a little odd, given that the streaming service wasn’t in play until the last few years or so and the actual physical DVD discs are what made it possible for Netflix to grow their business in the video rental market.

It’s no secret that Netflix has been trying to push customers in the direction of their online streaming service and move them away from the DVDs altogether – but the conversation that I had with the woman who was asking me questions about their DVD offerings seem to indicate that they are leaving money on the table by leaving their customers in the dark (whether this is being done intentionally or unintentionally by the company's marketing/advertising and promotions offerings obviously varies from customer to customer).

When I told her that she could rent DVDs from Netflix and to do so, she would have to add a DVD package to her streaming package, which would increase her monthly subscription fees, she still seemed interested in trying out their DVD service.

One of her only concerns were something that we can all relate to and understand as consumers – is it expensive? My concern, however, is the fact that there are people who really have no idea that DVD rentals are available from Netflix. On top of that, I am concerned about the fact that people like the woman I spoke with – people who are already paying a subscription fee for one service – have to add a separate package if they want DVDs.

I understand the company’s decision to split their streaming and the DVD services into to separate packages, to cater to the needs and interests of customers who only want one or the other – but what about those who want both? Why leave them out hanging to dry; confused, uninformed and/or having to piece together a rental package that fits their viewing interests by working various parts of the whole movie rental puzzle around until they find something that fits?

I am aware that this works in the grand scheme of things since we have a variety of VOD services that could rival most standard cable TV packages – but I’m talking about the services being offered by one company, under one roof. What is the deal with Netflix? Wouldn’t it be helpful if they offered a third service that combined DVDs and streaming, even if that service was limited to, say, one standard package such as 1-2 discs per month plus unlimited streaming?

What are YOU all up to these days?

Monday Movie Meme - We Interrupt this Program...

I saw “Bridget Jones’s Diary” starring Renée Zellweger, Hugh Grant and Colin Firth for the first time this weekend and there is so much Monday Movie Meme material that could be gathered from this cute little movie. Don’t be surprised if a series of themes based on the film pop up here in the coming weeks.

One of the scenes that stood out was the one where Bridget’s loud objection to a few surprising announcements during a party puts her in an awkward, yet, advantageous position. Is it inappropriate? Yes. Does it still get a pass? Maybe.

Surely, we know exactly why she’s not in favor of the lawyer and his elitist controlling girlfriend’s plans to re-locate and kick their relationship up a notch but the air in the room suggests that guests would have her head if she said so. Plus, it isn’t exactly proper to rain on somebody’s parade, so she saves face by doing what a good ol’ TV journalist would do -- spinning an angle that won’t work into one that does, to get out of a sticky situation. Still, the little that Bridget did say and much of what she didn’t speak seem to have translated well enough to grab the attention of the person that actually counts in that moment.

All is not lost, save for the rudeness in her interruption of those proud parents who had the floor. Anyway, the theme for this week’s Monday Movie Meme stems from her many not-so-polished moments -- We Interrupt this Program....

Share on your blog or in the comments section, movies featuring some of the most memorable outbursts that you ever saw on screen. These include scenes where one of the characters command the attention of the entire room -- usually at an inopportune time for everyone else in the scene. Sometimes, they bring positive results for the person making the outburst, sometimes they cause a whole heap of trouble for a particular person or set of characters in the story and other times, the person speaking or yelling or whatever just looks like look like an idiot. Either way, it’s a scene that sticks to your recollection of whatever movie you’re referencing in your selections this week. Accompanying “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” here are my selections for this week’s We Interrupt this Program... theme.

The Graduate

Dustin Hoffman’s character made it clear that Elaine was unforgettable -- and he was not going down without a fight!

Sex and the City: The Movie

Miranda sure knows how to disturb a fine dining experience by yelling at strangers -- even if it comes at the expense of embarrassing her friends. “Yeah, it’s all hot, two days in!”

*I’m aware that this movie was mentioned two weeks ago during the Mixology theme. I’m running on empty trying to come up with a variety of picks for some of my lists but hey, if a movie works for multiple themes, it works....

Why Did I Get Married Too?

I swear, the airport scene is one of the funniest OMG-is-this-really-happening? moments in this movie. It’s also feels much less contrived than the train scene in Perry’s previous release. “Get the ho number, Marcus!!!”

What movie outbursts would YOU add to this list?

Monday Movie Meme - The Little People

Remember the British filmmaker Duncan Cowles, whose short film “The Lady with the Lamp” screened during the 2012 Couch Fest Film Festival? Well, he recently touched base with me regarding some good news -- the movie (which also won Best Family Portrait at #2012CFF, by the way!) is now available online via Vimeo and YouTube.

So, if you have four minutes to spare during a lunch break or need some quick laughs, Cowles has made his short available for your viewing pleasure. Speaking of short stuff, allow me to introduce the theme of this week’s Monday Movie Meme: The Little People.

Share on your blog or in the comments section, the shortest movie characters that you’ve ever seen on the big (or small) screen. These characters do not have to be midgets per se -- they just have to be shorter than average height of all the other people in the film. Here are my selections for this week’s The Little People theme.

Bad Santa

The elf in this movie is about as short as they come but what he lacks in height, he makes up for in humor.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring & The Two Towers & Return of the King

Frodo, Sam, Pippin and Merry may be Hobbits who are so short that many of the women including Princess Arwen and Eowyn -- the lady of Rohan -- tower over these little guys, but they still have a lot of inches on Gimli, the Dwarf who is a bit overconfident in what he can contribute during the battles of Middle Earth.

Honey I Shrunk the Kids

If you think life is hard, try to walk a mile in the shoes of kids whose scientist father accidentally turned them into miniatures! Can the children in this movie still count as a proper selection for this week’s theme, even if they were at a normal height in some scenes? I don’t know but since I am having difficulty thinking of more short characters that fit the bill, I’ll let you all be the judge of that!

Who are the shortest movie characters that you’ve ever seen?
