Monday Movie Meme - The Big Impact!
The theme for this week's Monday Movie Meme is based on one of the questions from a blog fest hosted by Nostra at My Film Views and Karamel Kinema, in an attempt to expand upon it a bit: Life, Love and the Movies.
Share on your blog or in the comments section, movies that had a big impact on your life.
This can include movies that changed a small part of your view on life, films that you will forever cherish for their depiction of life as you see it, or films that moved you in some way, shape or form.
Here are my selections for this week's Life, Love and the Movies meme. They include films that were not mentioned when I did my post for Nostra's blog fest.
Booker's Place: A Mississipi Place
I'm glad to have been able to watch this documentary because it reminded me that settling for mediocrity is not an option. The importance of unity and putting your best foot forward, even when people are trying to bring you down continues to be all the more present in my mind, after watching it.
The movie also makes me even more aware of the fact that your enemies, whoever they may be, don't always come at you directly -- many are clever and use folks from your own community, circle of friends, workplace or family, to destroy you, which kinda reminds me of the movies "Malcolm X" directed by Spike Lee and "Panther" directed by Mario Van Peebles.
Street Paper
This documentary about a group of homeless men and women who are working as newspaper vendors was an enlightening movie to watch for many reasons -- two of them being that we are best to not take things for granted. Also, you can always pick yourself up and make your way out of an undesirable circumstance; sheer will and determination allow you to make your tomorrows better than today.
Walk the Line
I hold a special for this biographical musical drama about Johnny Cash, because it tells a great story of redemption.
These are the few that come to mind at the moment.

Rosewood first introduced me to something historically that I hadn't really thought about. It was tough watching that movie but I was able to walk away with the knowledge of both man's depth of depravity and the ability for man to break the cycle of hate.
Passion of the Christ took things to a whole new level in showing just what Christ went through. Whether you believe or not, the abuse He took in the name of redeeming us as sinners just ripped my heart to pieces.
Jonathan Livingston Seagull - It's one of my favorite movies of all time. And yes, I loved the book too!

Wow...where to begin? ;-)
-Fight Club: This movie impacted me so much that our son's first and middle name is Tyler Durden
-Repo Man: This movie perfectly shaped my taste in music, and turned me into a big Harry Dean Stanton fan
-The Warriors: A movie that contains the perfect example of anti-heroes, and opened my eyes to the fact that good guys don't always wear white
-Twelve Angry Men: I first saw this movie while serving in the Air Force, and stayed up until 2am to watch it. This is the perfect character-driven movie, and showed me how powerful film can be if given the right cast
That's only four. There are many more, but I'm late for dinner! Great topic!!
Angela,
Just like all other destructive cycles, I think that hate is one that continues in a cycle until it's broken and I agree with you about man having the ability to break it. I remember my grandmother taking me to see "Rosewood." Had she not insisted that we go check it out, I might not have even known about it. "Passion of the Christ" was one of those movies that I steered clear from, partly because of all the controversy surrounding it. One human being willing to sacrifice himself for the redeption of others or brighter future of his or her fellow man is a noble undertaking, which makes me think of Nelson Mandela.
MJ,
It's a home run when the movie is just as good as the book that it is based upon. Thanks for sharing a movie that had a big impact on your life. I can't say I'm familiar with "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" so now I'm off to look it up! :)
Herman,
A guys gotta eat! I hope you enjoyed your dinner :) So I've learned something new about how Tyler's name came to be. Wow! Talk about having an impact. I'm adding "The Warriors" to my rental queue and am still waiting to watch "Fight Club" (despite the fact that, honestly, I'm a bit afraid to see it); Funny how one medium (movies) can spark your interest in another medium (music). I can relate to your "Repo Man" experience, as I wasn't very familiar with Johnny Cash or any of his music until I saw "Walk the Line" and now I enjoy his tunes quite often. Thanks for participating this week and I'm glad you like the topic!
There are really so many. To Kill a Mockingbird and an Australian movie, The Castle are two of my favourites.
