Movie Characters Seeking Roadside Assistance

A SEPTA bus driver recently closed the door on me while I was boarding the vehicle on Roosevelt Boulevard. If I didn’t bang on the door for him to open it back up, I would’ve had to wait an hour for the next bus.

The main character in my short film, Abyss, has to do just that since public transportation appears to be his only means of getting to a friend’s house in West Philly. It is an unfortunate, yet common situation that brings us to the theme for this week’s Monday Movie Meme: Roadside Assistance.

Share on your blog or in the comments section, movies where people are stranded without transportation to or from a desired, or undesired, destination. The transportation does not have to be on the ground – it can be via plane, train, automobile, etc. – you get the picture! Here are my selections for this week’s Roadside Assistance theme.

Poetic Justice

There is a scene in this romantic drama, where a postman’s co-worker/friend leaves him on the side of a highway when his domestic dispute escalates to violence. He then walks alongside of the road, brushing his head proclaiming “This ain’t my motherf—g day!” Yeah, I bet.

A Good Day to Be Black and Sexy

One of the vignettes in this romantic drama tells the story of a teenage girl whose male suitor kicks her out of his car, leaving her stranded on a city street, late at night – on her birthday! Fortunately for this girl, she has really good female friends who helped get her out of a scary situation.

These are the only two movies featuring people who are stranded that I can think of right now.

What movies have YOU watched where someone is stranded on the side of a street or road or airport or train station or whatever?

Planes, Trains and Automobiles is the first to come to mind.

Rat Race; that seems to be one of the themes

Wha?! Somebody actually shut the door in your face? Man, that makes my blood boil!

Okay, movies where people get stranded? Hmmmm

- Seven Psychopaths - Stranded in the desert after having their car torched (have you seen this movie yet?)
- The Game - Left for dead in Mexico
- Pirates of the Caribbean - Stranded on an island. Needs to lash together sea turtles with his hair
- Dead Man - Spent his last on a train ticket into town. Now all he needs is an Indian spirit guide...
- Identity - *Everybody* gets stranded at a hotel, and a killer's on the loose

Man, that was tons of fun! Great post!

Angela,

You know...I still haven't seen Planes, Trains and Automobiles yet. I'm slacking tremendously. Something else to queue up on netflix.

Melanie,

For some reason...I wouldn't have guessed that being stranded is among the themes in Rat Race. I thought that movie was about jobs or something....gotta look it up! Thanks for commenting :)

Herman,

Tell me about it! That incident was the first time that something like that happened to me when boarding a SEPTA vehicle. Up until then, I just encountered the usual rude drivers, nasty employees, delays without notifications and the best of 'em all....bus drivers blatantly skipping passengers! I mean, they don't even bother to stop even when there are obvious bus stop signs on the street. It is beyond ridiculous but I digress...

You always have some goodies to share for the memes and it's a pleasure to see what appears on your list. No, I haven't seen Seven Psychopaths but know where to look when I'm renting a flick for the weekend :) In fact, The Game and Pirates of the Caribbean are the only movies among your selections this week that I've actually watched. Identity is calling me too. Thanks for participating in this weeks meme.

Hrm, I'm sure I'll think of five billion after I post, but I'm struggling, as the ones I was going to say were already taken. Doesn't someone get stranded in The Mexican? And yes, I thought of Planes, Trains and Automobiles first. How about Home Alone? He missed the van to the airport (and thus the plane), and was stuck at home.

First one that comes to my mind is Grand Canyon. It's one of those divergent character movies who are brought together by circumstance. One of those circumstances is a car breakdown. It's a heart-tugging film and quite good.
