Standing in the Shadows of Kiefer Sutherland

I was aware that many celebrity families are full of actors but did not know that the acting tree stretched through many generations in Kiefer Sutherland's family .

Fellow movie blogger Cindy (aka Moonshadow) over at My Movie Mania examines how being a sibling of Kiefer Sutherland, our current King Dong, comes with tough responsibilities. Find out what happens when horror film sequels are combined with actors who's skills may be a little premature:

As a horror movie fan and a girl who is willing to watch almost anything, I’ve seen most of the things that Kiefer Sutherland has been in, including some of the very good and underrated films he made like Freeway.

My favorite Kiefer Sutherland role remains his portrayal of the not-so-good doctor in Alex Proyas’ Dark City and I’ve loved his dad in dozens of different roles over the years, certainly including his horror roles.

I’ve even read the interview where Kiefer mentions that he benefitted from the time his father took off from acting to spend with Kiefer’s three step-brothers as they were growing up. Unfortunately for his brother Angus, Kiefer did not pass on the same favor to him. Last year, 20 years after Kiefer made a huge splash in The Lost Boys, Angus agreed to start in the sequel.

The results were not promising for the younger Sutherland. As any fan of the first movie will attest, Lost Boys: The Tribe was not worth the 21 years wait between release dates. It is not an awful movie, though it is considerably more tongue-in-cheek and less dark than the original.

However, selecting Angus to take on a role where he would so obviously be compared to his older brother was patently unfair to the younger Sutherland. Kiefer has had time to mature as an actor and his portrayal of “David” is one of the best vampire villains of all time. Angus’ “Shane” walks in the shadow of a best actor brother and a cult classic movie.

As a horror fan, from indies to major blockbusters, I’ve seen a lot of really bad acting in horror movies and to his credit, Angus never reaches that level. But it might be a lot better for his little brother if Kiefer had not created such big shoes to fill.

Behind the Scenes: Kiefer Sutherland in Mirrors

Kiefer Sutherland won the King Dong crown earlier this month, bringing props to 24 on Fox and the movie, Monsters vs Aliens. You may or may not be aware that this TV actor was also in Mirrors, which was released in the fall of 2008 and is now available on DVD. In Mirrors, Kiefer Sutherland playes Ben Carson, an ex-NYPD officer who take a security job at a burned-out department store. He later discovers that mirrors at his job are putting his family in danger. The majority of this movie was filmed in Bucharest, Romania. Whether you already watched Mirrors with Kiefer Sutherland or not, here are some behind the scenes facts you may not know:

It took 12 weeks for the Art Department to transform a section of the Academy of Sciences building in Bucharest to a burned-out department store. The realistic movie set created an "incredible amount of freedom" that Keifer Sutherland enjoyed while filming Mirrors. It was not easy for the Mirrors production team to find furniture and other household items in Bucharest that resembled a typical New Jersey home where Keifer Sutherland's character and family would reside.

Kiefer Sutherland was not so much concerned about finding New Jersey-esque decor' as he was impressed by Bucharest's 97% literacy rate. During a technically driven post on Kiefer Sutherland Home, the 24 star is noted as stating "There are five year-olds running around who can kick my ass in chess". That may not be easy for many Kiefer Sutherland fans to believe after witnessing him kick butt as Jack Bauer on Fox's 24 TV show.

Kiefer Sutherland Claims the King Dong Spot

We loved Vincent D'Onofrio when he won the crown, got to check him out behind the scenes on Staten Island and made him the longest running and undefeated King on the Madlab Post.

Now, it's time for Jack who is also known as Keifer Sutherland but no necessarily in that order. If you have not watched 24 on Fox, you are missing an action packed adventure headed by one of the most active and talented actors in Hollywood. Keifer Sutherland is the MAN! He has good looks, a nice body and gives a great performance on his popular TV show. What more can TV and movie fans ask for?

Check out some behind the scenes tidbits that I gathered on our new King Dong:

A recent discussion about Keifer Sutherland's character Jack Bauer brought up an interesting concern thanks to one of my dear friends. When does Jack Bauer ever get to eat? This question came up after discussing a well known concern regarding 24 , which Keifer Sutherland gladly answered during a Comic Convention. That question was, When does Jack Bauer take a pee?

I also like the fact that Keifer Sutherland supports independent filmmaking projects like the One Second Film.

Most of the roles for Keifer Sutherland has included voice overs. Movie and TV fans are familiar with his role in the recent film release, Monsters vs. Aliens. However, he has done the voice for a number of other characters movie characters. Keifer Sutherland also starred in Mirrors, playing an ex-cop. We'll cover that more in the next few weeks.

Stay tuned for more on Keifer Sutherland. If you have not done so already, Subscribe to Madlab Post by Email and tell your friends and family to do the same!
