Not Your Average Dinner and a Movie: The Most Magnificent Thing #NaBloPoMo

A few lucky folks who came to see and vote on storyboard artist Arna Selznick’s The Most Magnificent Thing when this STEM themed film screened during the Short Film Slam were in for an extra treat! 

Checking out one of the structures in the gym at CANstruction 2019. Participating teams included USA Architects, JKRP, Turner Construction and more. You had to be there to see it.The Madlab Post studio was in its second year of operation while a design and build contest called CANstruction was happening in the gym at Bok. 

Every year, teams of architects, engineers, contractors and designers get together to build life-size structures made out of canned food.

Following a public exhibit, the cans used for these structures are donated to local hunger relief organization, Philabundance.  

Based on Ashley Spires’ best-selling book of the same name, The Most Magnificent Thing is an animated short starring Academy Award winner Whoopi Goldberg, Alison Pil (Vice; American Horror Story) and Lilly Barlam (The Handmaid's Tale).

The film is about the perseverance and creativity of an architect’s daughter who receives her very own tool box, and then embarks on a quest to build a masterpiece for her pet pug.

Wordless Wednesday: A Summer Movie Matinee with Kay #NaBloPoMo

Kay came by to visit The Madlab Post headquarters at Bok where she watched, discussed and voted on the latest lineup from the Short Film Slam. We met when I started hosting private screenings and teaching filmmaking workshops.

Tell me, what are some of the best films you've watched this past summer? 

Short Film Slam is on with Zombie Apocalypse, Soldiers in Turmoil and Wild Zoom Meetings

16 year-old Mia Tretta was shot when her classmate opened fire at Saugus High School in 2019, killing two of her friends. Just when Mia's life was returning to normal, the first wave of Los Angeles County's COVID-19 lockdown brought on intense isolation. During the summer, a creative family project helped channel Mia's energy into honing her skills as a film actress. 

Two young siblings must take care of their dangerously ill parent and protect each other from the outside world during a pandemic in "Day 14."She currently stars in Day 14, a short film centered around the strength of family during dark and uncertain times. Day 14 is now showing in our virtual screening room alongside one dozen short films including In Your Arms Tonight, a University of Texas drama about a young maid who contemplates her future after having an affair with her rich employer.

From a deputy in a small town on the hunt for a missing child in the thriller Sidewinder, to an Iranian drama about a soldier caught in a dilemma between ethics and duty, Round III of The Madlab Post's Short Film Slam features multicultural perspectives on several themes including parenting, family drama, self-identity and the complexities of war, crime and punishment, and John Gray's (CBS' Ghost Whisperer) dark comedy about a Zoom meeting that goes off the rails.
